Reel World Theory – Studio Portraiture in the wild

Social Portraiture – Reel World Theory

Often, as a commercial photographer I find myself assigned to photograph people for a variety of editorial and environmental portraits. Usually it’s a relatively simple matter of arriving at the location, doing a quick scout, find a room, suitably aesthetic background or wall near a power outlet, set up lights, take a couple of controlled test exposures and then wait for my person of interest to arrive.

With our upcoming P.O.T.S assignment we’ve got a much different scenario as we’ll be shooting social media portraits of as many folks as will fit in our 3-hour session. The “location” is outside, late afternoon through evening on the Downtown Square in Ocala and the goal is to make each portrait as unique to the individual as possible.

MDA Rogue’s Gallery

One of the great things about doing pro-bono work is the freedom allowed us to do our own thing (within reasonable limitations). Such is the case for this month’s “On-Assignment” project – Rogue’s Gallery.
When Cindy and I were contacted last month about participating in this year’s annual Ocala Muscular Dystrophy Association “Lock Up” we agreed immediately that it would be an interesting assignment. Out of the thousands of commercial, corporate and personal portraits Cindy and I have taken over the years neither of us could remember ever photographing someone in handcuffs, behind bars, wearing prison stripes all while inside a Country Club setting.

Yeah, this would be fun for all.. Over the next week (leading up to the event May 26th, 2010) I’ll be posting our ideas, sketches on the set we’re building for the event, lighting tests and of course, after the event, our favorites from the rogues gallery.

Assignment – Teen Portrait – MySpace

senior portraiture - nathan
Yesterday, I photographed Nate for his new MySpace page. Shooting Senior Portraits is alot like Foreign Films, either you get `em or, you don’t. Personally, I love working with Teens on creating a portrait they feel expresses who they are or, at least, who’d they like to think they are. Nate’s session however, proved to be a bit more of a challange.
